Glossitis is an inflamation of the tongue, often caused by irritation from the sharp edges of decayed teeth or dental plates, also by injuries, tobacco,alcohol, fungus infestations, infectious poisons and burns.Systemic diseases, like anemia, diet deficiencies and fevers may often be the cause.

The tongue, gums and mouth should be washed and carefully cleansed twice a day in fevers or others diseases, using soap and water followed by a thorough rinsing with warm salt or baking soda solution ( a teaspoonful to a glass of water), or with liquor antisepticus.

In case of inflammation the same treatment is to be followed every three hours.The tongue is subject to serious diseases, tuberculosis or cancer in the case of pipe smokers. All tongue affections should receive prompt medical attentions
